The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
