French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, following months of insistence from the UK.

The change in policy comes after the British leader sent a letter to the French leader urging him to support the plan and stating there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.

French security forces will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to official statements.

French police have rarely intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats leaving the shoreline because it is considered excessively high a risk to both officers and individuals.

"It is essential that we implement these methods this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."

Now, a French maritime police representative says personnel will start taking action at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.

Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential technique to disable the engines of the boats.

This determination to intervene at all is a major advancement, following a brief change towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous government official left government.

This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a summit between the UK leader and President, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the hulls of a vessel.

Currently French officials will again be allowed to intercept boats before they pick up asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of northern France, however it's not clear how the small boats will be prevented.

Strong winds are presently delaying the start of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be seeking methods to adapt to avoid interception, as they have done so often in the previous instances.

UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been approached for response.
